Ok ok, I know I have not posted in a while (I'm not sure if the Junior Senior post counts since it took about 2 seconds) but anyway, I wanted to give some props to The Glorious Hum for including me in her "blog roll". On Tuesday Josh Rouse released his latest album Country Mouse, City House. If you are familiar with and have liked any of his previous releases then you will surely enjoy this record. He doesn't push the envelope or chart new territories in his writing/performing, and I couldn't care less. This album is just as good as 1972 and that is cool with me.

Do you like phat blue break beats? Do you not have any idea what I am talking about? Who cares! Check out this song by Richard "Groove" Holmes for some funky organ and a swinging beat. Jazz organ is under appreciated.

So, the "hot new remix" of this week/next month is shaping up to be the Justice remix of Justin Timberlakes Love Stoned. Being the music snob that I am, I have not actually heard the original of the song, but I don't really care, because I'm sure Justice made the song 100 times better. Today's next two bands are both of the indie rock persuasion. The first is not the conventional band in the sense that the lead singer plays saxophone and organ peddles for the bass. But hey, it works and they have some pretty cool songs. My friend Ross turned me onto Menomena and now I am passing them on to you. The other band is out of nyc and are about to put out their second album. The Mugs do not have any cool gimmicks like Menomena, but that is not bad. They write solid rock songs and from what I have read, put on pretty sweet live shows.

It is friday and I am ready to enjoy the weekend, a long week of two jobs is no fun no matter how easy they are.

After yesterdays discovery that the Stars album In Our Bedroom After The War was on iTunes I have since listened to it about 5 times. Very solid effort with a sound that I can only think of as Camera Obscura-ish, which I love. Two songs; Take Me To The Riot and Midnight Coward are favorites of mine right now. Another song that some random reader sent to me is from that hilarious/sadly depressing movie Boogie Nights. Remember the first time "Dirk" gets it on with Roller girl? Of course you do. What about that really random song that is playing in the background? Ah yes, the infamous Brand New Key by Melanie. Dig.

I don't know how, but when I went to iTunes this morning to check out the new releases, the new Stars album In Our Bedroom After The War was there. So, I wasted no time and purchased the album in case it was a fluke. Last time I checked this album was due out on September 25th so it was a pleasant surprise to find it. Just wanted to give a heads up to anyone who is looking forward to this album. I am listening to it right now and am impressed. I know some bloggers have thought that the album is not as good as Set Yourself On Fire but as I sit here listening to the album in its whole, I would disagree. But hey, thats my opinion. Point is, it's on iTunes and it's worth the buy.

Tomorrow is kind of a big deal to some music fans. Three big albums are dropping in the morn (no, I do not mean the lost tracks of Danzig or the Hairspray soundtrack). I am of course talking of † by Justice, Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga by Spoon and Our Love To Admire by Interpol. Now, the Justice album has been out in Europe since June 11th (Yay America!) and it is just finally crossing the Atlantic. I'm sure it won't be as big as Kelly Clarksons new album (no idea why) but hopefully, some savvy music consumers will stumble upon this masterpiece of an album. Spoon is a band that seems to get better with each listen. Ga x5 is full of great indie-rock songs from spoon. The Underdog is a standout track and already has itself a music video (Unfortunately it's on myspace). The last of the three greats to come out tomorrow is Interpol's long awaited third release. I have heard about half the songs on the album so far and am convinced that it is better than Antics. Not sure about Turn On The Bright Lights though. All I'm saying is that I am looking forward to this release. For now I will post the first track Pioneer To The Falls. So, go forth and be thankful that the summer has produced something more worthwhile than a bad sunburn and 40 hour workweeks.

New Animal Collective?! Yes. As of July 4th, all of the animal collective songs had been leaked onto the internet. I have heard a few of them so far and am impressed. I am partiularly taken with Fireworks so far. Also, Strawberry Jam is the 8th full length album from Animal Collective....8!! Does that seem like a lot to anyone. I could have sworn Here Comes The Indian came out last year....or 4. Anyway, this is sure to be an excellent album.

I have been to San Francisco a few times and have witnessed some of the events that make it so unique, but I really missed out on the 4th. Some of the irony is pretty funny and hey, where else can you find a picture of a statue of Bush with a rocket for a penis which happens to be being struck by lightning that seems to come from Jesus in the sky. As ALL of you know, The New Pornographers new album is due out this August (the 21st to be exact) and I am just as excited about it as you. Challengers is creating quite the titter among other bloggers and I figured I should join the club. The title track is led by one of my favorite vocalists Neko Case and is so warm that I dare you to not like it, and the same goes for this next song. All The Old Showstoppers has an interesting reference to John the Baptist that some may recognize from Neko Cases song John Saw That Number. The recently released Myriad Harbour has a nice verse/echo thing happening.

I have thouroughly enjoyed every song I have heard off this album on the first listen. Yes, that is only four songs so far, but with four solid songs on an album by these great musicians has a very small chance of failing.

Hey Gang! It is hard to find music to post here while I am not near my 2 external hard drives (pushes coke bottle glasses back up onto nose) so I usually end up finding a couple tunes to download from blogs and then reposting them here. I swear, I have a bunch of music I want to post, but it is not accessible right now. So, I think today I will look for some older songs that are actually on my computer and maybe some new stuff.

When I was home in Maine a couple weeks ago I was a music downloading frenzy because I knew when I cam back to Virginia I would not have the opportunity for a while. One of the albums I got was the new Shout Out Louds LP Our Ill Wills which for some reason is out in Europe, yet is being released in the US on September. One of my favorite songs from their previous effort Howl Howl Gaff Gaff was Go Sadness. A nice little diddy from Our Ill Wills is the popular Tonight I Have To Leave It. I will post both of them for some comparison listening.

The other song is again from Justices LP †. The song? DVNO. The song is driving me crazy because I feel like the vocals are from a popular 80's song that I have never heard. The only difference is that Justice goes to town on it to shape it into an instant party classic (according to me).

While reading a post in Good Weather For Airstrikes about the Daft Punk performance at the O2 Wireless Festival in London the other day I came across some remixes by a British DJ Kissy Sell Out. I feel that his best remix by far is of a song by All Saints called Chick Fit. I would try and break down the parts of the song but my shift is almost up and I want to get this posted. The other song I am putting up is off Feist's new album The Reminder. The song? Sea Lion Woman. Minimalist clap beat over beautiful vocals are enough to make this song a gem. (Yes, a gem.) Ok, here they are.

Clearly, Justice is the hot band of the summer. And even though my housemates think that I am just going through a faze by listening to this music, I shall prove them wrong in showing that Justice is actually a hot band that other people besides myself and Plus Move listen to here in the U.S.. New Post Finally!

Wow, it has been a while since I have posted on here. Sorry about that but this school year ended kind of rough and it is taking me a while to get situated. Plus I have not had a steady internet connection. So, quick overview, I know have the new Justice album † and also saw Alison Krauss and Union Station with special guest Toni Rice in concert last weekend. First off, the concert was amazing. Great performance from Alison and her whole band. The dude who was the singing voice for George Clooney in 'O Brother Where Art Thou played mandolin and sang some tunes which was cool. The slide guitarist was just as impressive. Some good ol amerrrcan music.

Next big item, †. It officially comes out July 10th, but it was leaked onto the internet about a week ago. The album is insane. Some of the songs have been out for a while now like D.A.N.C.E., Let There Be Light and Waters Of Nazareth but the rest are all new. Some standouts are Genesis and its transition into Let There Be Light, and New Jack. I cannot stop playing this album, which is a nice break from my usual depressing crap. And hey, it keeps me awake on my long sojourns from VA to ME. So, I am putting up New Jack for its crazy cool break down and general catchy-ness.

Tereu Tereu are a local band from Fredericksburg, Va/The University of Mary Washington; and they are about to release their debut E.P. Feline Ambition. The first single (the one song that Ross sent me) Furwinked (The Lion/Bear Song) is the first indie rock song I have heard in a while with a Vibraphone. That is not so bad, because this band makes it work well.

From the bands drummer: "Tereu Tereu have been together in its current incarnation since about September of 2006 playing whatever it is we play (usually pop indie type rock). We recently recorded our debut 3 song E.P. Feline Ambition with Jason Caddell (Dismemberment Plan) and mixed it with Devin Ocampo (Medications, Beauty Pill) which should be ready for consumption any minute now. Tereu Tereu are Ross Marshall (drums, percussion, vocals), Matt Bradshaw (trumpet, keys), Ryan Little (vocals, guitar), and Adam Bray (bass)." They aren't too bad live either, so check em out. For all of you who read this blog regularly I'm sure you know of Plus Move. (They were in the first post). In case you are wondering why I know about/love this band it's because a friend and band mate from high school is one of the members. I have sort of kept track of their progress since they started up last July.

Well, there is a cool new development for them, an article in The Phoenix, which is a New England arts and entertainment magazine/newspaper based in Portland/Boston/Providence. They also had their first show last weekend that was apparently off the hook (sorry I couldn't drive up to Boston to see it). So, in an attempt to continue spreading the good news that is Plus Move here is the article and an older song from Plus Move, Live It Up. Be sure to check these guys out before they become the next Justice.

Today I will be featuring two indie artists that I have been playing a lot lately. Walker Kong and Laura Veirs. If you have heard of either of them (Besides my friends who read this) then congrats. From what I can tell these artists are still pretty unknown to a lot of music snobs. Maybe I am wrong, it doesn't really matter. Both of these artists have put out recent albums. Laura Veirs Saltbreakers and Walker Kong's Deliver Us From People.

Pink Light by Laura Veirs is a pretty catchy simple guitar tune. The lyrics are really what make this song standout:
" Sorry I was cruel, I was protecting myself
Drifting along with my swords out flying
Tattering my own cells and I tattered yours, too
Took you and rocked you around me like a spell"

Also, since I'm a drummer the clapping polyrythms are pretty hip. It may not mean much to anyone else, but it's nice to hear something like that in an already cool song.

Andy Warhol And The Honey Bees by Walker Kong is the next song. The intro drums hearken back to the intro from I Feel Free by Cream. I'm sure you all know you it.... Anyway, the rest of the song builds off this beat with some lilting guitars and the lead singer bringing the song home perfectly. I would like to give props to the Glorious Hum for turning me onto this song. That is all for now, it's dinner time.

Sunday Post to Distract Myself

Well, I have not posted in a while, but it doesn't really matter cause no one reads this. Ok, on to the music cause I do not feel well right now and I need something to keep my mind off things. I downloaded Donovan's "Catch the Wind" this week cause I could not keep it out of my head. It's from the GE commercial that airs during The Office. I know that is specific, but again, no one reads this. I will not be uploading it because like a good boy, I purchased the song from iTunes. Yesterday I went to DC with my girlfriend to hit up some galleries and just get off campus. That was the big set-up, here is the story. So, you know all those street vendors that sell hot dogs and soda and stuff? Yeah, well, they also sell egg rolls. Is it me or does that not fit at all? Granted, all the workers of these stands are Asian, but still, it is a tad bit odd.
Menu: Hot Dog, Polish Sausage, Vienna Sausage, Soda, Chip, Ice Cream, Egg Roll. Ok, enough of that story, it is not and did not go anywhere.

Back to music: I got that Amy Winehouse album which was a somewhat pleasant surprise. Her voice is different but the music is solid. Very reminiscent of Motown with its own updated twist. Ok, I have to admit, I really have no idea what is going on in music these days, both the indie side and pop. I never listen to the radio and rarely read mp3 blogs or pitchfork and whatnot. I just want to throw that out there in case for some reason she is really popular right now. Yes, I do generally know when albums are coming out, but I don't have a calendar or anything with this all mapped out. What else, oh yeah, this band I'm From Barcelona (who are from Sweden...no comment) is pretty neat. The album is called Let Me Introduce My Friends and features swede companions Loney, Dear. It is all fairly catchy indie pop that promises to keep you happy. The song Treehosue has a very Polyphonic Spree sound to it even with the main instrument being a banjo. I guess that is all for tonight because I just do not want to be sitting here anymore, my bed looks a lot more inviting.

Panda Bear is Comfy in Nautica.

I have recently fallen in love with the new Panda Bear album person pitch. I am a fan of Animal Collective and was excited to hear this solo effort by Panda Bear (a.k.a. Noah Lennox). Most of it follows the same echo repetition with a sort of chanting ethereal quality that can be found on many Animal Collective albums. The first track is very reminiscent of a Beach Boys harmonized single and instantly catchy. The rest of the album flows very nicely. I am posting the first song as a teaser for the rest.

Another artist that is neither new or very underground but who I love just same is Neko Case. I discovered her one night in the campus radio station and was hooked from the first song "If You Knew' off her live album The Tigers Have Spoken. One of the most striking things about her music is her voice. It is reminiscent of such great country/folk artists such as Patsy Cline and Loretta Lynn. She is also the lead singer many of The New Pornographers songs. The song I am posting is from her solo record Blacklisted. Check it out, cause I think it's pretty neat. Yes, neat.

Justice Vs. Franz Ferdinand, Bloc Party (SebastiAn Remix), Neutral Milk Hotel

Today's post includes two remixes and an older song that is custom to praise among indie scholars and music nerds(same thing). The first is a remix of Franz Ferdinand by Justice. I won't lie, the first time I heard this song I could have taken or leaven it. The second time through however, a lot better. The break down of the vocal part is pretty cool, if not actually consistent. The next song is a remix of a Bloc Party song of their new LP, A Weekend In The City. Though I had not heard the song before the mix, it inspired (yes, inspired) me to listen to the real song. Even though I do not consider Bloc Party as one of the greatest bands ever (they have some catchy songs with better than average lyrics), this mix and original are pretty good.

The last song is from Neutral Milk Hotel, the acclaimed indie band of mid-90's fame. If you have not heard of this band or this song (Holland, 1945) then you have some catching up to do. Parts of the song are loosely based on the Diary of Anne Frank which Jeff Mangum had read prior to Aeroplane. The lyrics are truly beautiful, if not even sad. I offer this one song among the whole album as a starting point for no particular reason except that, I can't post the whole album. All I can say now is to buy the album. I actually went out and bought it on vinyl last year because there is something about that medium that I feel meshes with the album so well. Till next time.

This is my first attempt at a music blog. I am still searching around to figure out a good way to post mp3's and such, but hopefully I decide on something soon. I pretty much want to use this to just babble about what music I am listening to. This does not mean that I will be talking about all kinds of super secret up and coming bands all the time I might decide to post a Leo Kottke song I am listening to or some other random song that you should know.

To get things started I am putting up an Uffie track that I just heard last night and thought was pretty cool/funny. Normally this is not my kind of music, but I gave it a shot because she is part of the ed banger group which I have recently fallen in love with. It all started with my friend Paul who is in the group Plus Move. I will also throw up their new mixe of the Justice track D.A.N.C.E.. That's all for now, enjoy the songs.
